City Proposes New Downtown Maintenance Team
The Downtown San Rafael Business Improvement District is excited to share news from the City of San Rafael's proposed 2026-27 budget that will help beautify Downtown!
Following the dissolution of the Downtown Streets Team program, the Department of Public Works has requested funding for two new full-time Parks Maintenance Worker positions dedicated to downtown maintenance and beautification efforts.
According to the City's proposed budget, these positions would help provide a more consistent level of service throughout Downtown San Rafael, including:
- Litter cleanup and beautification
- Pressure washing
- Graffiti removal
- Illegal dumping response
- Parking garage maintenance
- Encampment cleanup support
- Other high-visibility maintenance needs
The City notes that adding dedicated in-house staff would improve responsiveness, coordination, and operational efficiency while providing more reliable service to businesses, residents, and visitors. The proposed staffing model is also expected to be more cost-effective than relying solely on contracted services.
The BID has long advocated for enhanced downtown maintenance resources and is encouraged to see this proposal included in the City's draft budget. We will continue to monitor the budget process and share updates as they become available.
